About Course

Personal Fitness is not a badge you finish in a weekend. At its heart is a 12-week physical fitness and nutrition program that you design with your counselor, carry out, and log. Everything else in this course gets you ready for those twelve weeks, or helps you make sense of them afterward.

Along the way you will define what fitness actually means, look honestly at your own habits, measure where you are starting from, build a program around your own goals and ability, and then do the work.

Start this badge when you can see it through. The 12 weeks cannot be rushed or compressed. If your program is interrupted by illness or an unavoidable conflict for less than two weeks, you may pick up where you left off and add the missed time to the end.

An important note on health. This course is study material for a merit badge. It is not medical advice, and it does not tell you what to weigh, what to eat, or how hard to train. Those are conversations for you, your parent or guardian, and your doctor. Talk to them before you begin any new exercise program, and work with your counselor to adapt any assessment or exercise you cannot safely do.

Only a registered Personal Fitness merit badge counselor can sign off requirements. The official requirements on Scoutbook and at scouting.org are always the final word.

Course Content

Topic 1: What Personal Fitness Means
Requirement 1 asks you to explain what personal fitness means to you. That is broader than push-ups: it covers physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual fitness, and how all of it connects to the Scout Oath and Law.

  • Start Here: How This Badge Works
  • Lesson 1: What Physically Fit Actually Means
  • Lesson 2: Mentally, Emotionally, and Socially Fit
  • Lesson 3: Spiritually Fit, and Why All of It Matters
  • Lesson 4: Fitness and the Scout Oath and Law
  • Quiz: What Personal Fitness Means

Topic 2: Monitoring Your Health
Requirement 2 covers the two check-ups that catch problems before you notice them: your annual physical examination and your dental examination.

Topic 3: Your Habits, Honestly
Requirement 3 has seven parts, and every one of them asks about YOU: your exercise, your choices, your diet, your sleep, your relationships. There are no trick answers here. The point is an honest look at where you are before you try to change anything.

Topic 4: Measure Your Baseline
Requirements 4 and 5. You agree your assessments with your counselor, perform them, record the results, keep a three-day food log, and set your improvement goals. This is the starting line everything in requirement 7 is measured against.

Topic 5: Build Your 12-Week Plan
Requirement 6. You outline a comprehensive 12-week fitness and nutrition program WITH your counselor, built around your own improvement goals and ability. Five required elements, plus a plan for your two nutrition goals.

Topic 6: Run the Program
Requirement 7, and the heart of this badge. Twelve consecutive weeks, logged. Assessments repeated at week 4, week 8, and after week 12. Food logs in weeks 8 and 12. Come back to this topic throughout — it is written to be read in stages, not all at once.

Topic 7: Where This Leads
Requirement 8. Do ONE of the two options: explore three careers related to personal fitness, or explore how an area of personal fitness could contribute to a hobby or healthy lifestyle. You can work on this during your 12 weeks rather than waiting until the end.

Topic 8: Meet Your Counselor
Everything in one place: what you must SHOW, what you must DISCUSS, what to bring, and how to talk through twelve weeks of results.
